‘Choghadiya’ comprises two Sanskrit words: Cho(four) and Ghadiya (a moment or ghatika). In Vedic astrology, Choghadiya Muhurat is a system that divides each day into eight equal time slots. These eight segments last 90 minutes (1.5 hours) and are influenced mainly by planets excluding Rahu and Ketu.
People use this system to note all the auspicious time periods for the day so that they can perform important events such as marriage, travel, or starting new projects. However, the Shubh Choghadiya differs daily and by location since it is calculated based on the local sunrise and sunset times. Below is a table that mentions the effects of performing specific activities during today Choghadiya.
Chogadiya Muhurat Name | Ruling Planet & Effects | Activities Recommended |
---|---|---|
Udveg | Sun (Bad) | Government/ Politics related work |
Amrit | Moon (Good) | Good for all types of activities |
Rog | Mars (Bad) | War, Fights, Debate, Competition |
Labh | Mercury (Good) | Starting a new business, job or education |

In total, there are seven types of Choghadiyas. These are further categorised based on Auspicious Choghadiya and Inauspicious Choghadiya. Let us have a closer look at these Good or Bad Choghadiya:
There are four categories of Auspicious Choghadiya: Shubh, Labh, Amrit, and Char. Each category has two time periods—day and Night—and is considered auspicious for a specific task. Let us learn more about them now.
Unlike today best time, inauspicious Choghadiyas are unlucky times that result in adverse or harmful outcomes. There are three categories of inauspicious Choghadiyas: Udveg, Kaal, and Rog. Let us examine these three inauspicious Choghadiyas:
Udveg Choghadiya
The word ‘Udveg’ means restlessness and is linked to the planet Sun. Like its meaning, this type of inauspicious today and tomorrow Choghadiya is associated with unsettling energies. However, performing any government-related activities during this period is considered good.
Kaal Choghadiya
The word ‘Kaal’ here refers to ‘time’ but in a negative sense. It is ruled by Saturn, the planet of delay and obstacles. Performing auspicious activities such as religious rituals or starting new things during this time leads to unfavourable outcomes.
Rog Choghadiya
Rog Choghadiya is associated with the planet of action and drive, Mars. Activities performed during this inauspicious choghadiya may invite health issues or disputes. However, Rog Choghadiya is considered favourable for competing or defeating one’s enemy.
